MARKETING YOUR WEB SITE ON THE INTERNET

One of my clients was recently complaining to me about a page he has put up on the Internet (which he couldn't even remember the address!) but had absolutely no response from it since. That was 2 years ago. He paid RM500 (US$130) for a page to a freelance web designer thinking that it was really cheap for a 24 hour a day 365 days a year advertisement.

Unfortunately, there are many, many people even today who will be "wasting" their money, albeit minimal, only for the experience to turn sour. Too many web designers work on the if-you-build-it-they-will-come model. It doesn't happen that way. Unlike the giant bilboard, where it will definitely be noticed in a busy traffic area, an internet page no matter how small or grand will NEVER be found if no promotion of the site is implemented.

  1. Write a Page Title
  2. Submit Your Page to Search Engines
  3. Submit Your Page to Yahoo!

  6. Advertising on Other Media

1. Write a Page Title.

Make sure that you have a page title. When search engines find your site, your title will tell your potential visitor what your site is about. Most graphical web page design programs today will insist you have a page title.

If you are still write HTML, place the following scrpits between the <HEADER></HEADER> tags, in this format: <TITLE>Marketing on the Internet - Making Your Presence Felt</TITLE>

2. Submit Page to Search Engines.

This is a MUST. 90% of web users will use one or another search engine to look for your site. If your site is not found on any of the search engines, there will be hardly any chance of attracting visitors. The good news is, there are many free programs available to enable you to register to all the important search engines such as: AltaVista, Excite, HotBot, Lycos, Infoseek, and WebCrawler.

Try one of the following:

3. Submit Page to Yahoo.

Ask any web user and they'll tell you that the most useful directory service available is "Yahoo!". So make sure that your potential customers can find you there. Most search engine submission programs no longer submit to Yahoo. You will need to go specifically to the particular directory you want to locate yourself and click on the "Add URL" icon on top of the page.

4. Link Yourself on Industry Sites.

If you are a member of a trade organisation and they have a web site, make sure that the site have a link to your web site.

5. Include URL on Stationery, Cards, and Literature.

You have invested in a well designed web site with your own domain name. Then advertise it for free on all your company materials and documents - it just takes some minor changes in your next print shipment.

6. Advertising with Other Media

Continue to advertise in other media but feature your web site URL prominently for interested parties to obtain more information. That will probabaly save your support personnel valuable time as well.

7. Create a Free Service

Almost all successful e-shop web sites will require a "Free Service". Let it be free electronic flower bouquets, free electronic cards, free special calendar designs etc. Let the freebie services promote your site for you automatically.

8. Request Reciprocal Links.

Find complementary websites and request a reciprocal link to your site. For example, if you are an Interior Designer, make sure your site is link to multiple furniture companies or architect firms to share common clients.

9. Allow your Visitors to Leave their Address.

In your guest book and various suitable pages, let your visitors choose to leave their e-mail address to let you keep in touch with them regarding updates and changes to your site.

10. Publish an E-Mail Newsletter.

Yes, this takes up a lot of time and commitment. But whoever said doing business on the Internet was easy. It is however a excellent way of keeping in touch with your potential clients, updating them with the latest industry news and products. What's more, they are the exact prospects whom you want to do business with and its free!

11. Using E-Mail Signature

So you reply to 10s of e-mails everyday. Make use of that opportunity to ensure that your web site is publicised. Insert a "signature" into all your outgoing e-mails - its easy to do with all the latest e-mail programs today - with your web site address.

12. Announce a Contest.

Have a contest. Give things away free. That's how you do it in the physical world. That's the same way you should do over the Internet.

Why pay thousands of dollars to advertise yourself in other web sites when most of the time you will be able to advertise your site with banners for free.
